Dear Prime Minister,

I am writing to you because I strongly support the call of Pacific leaders for urgent climate action by Australia.
 
Along with other nations across the Pacific, Australia has identified climate change as the region’s single greatest security threat.    
 
Pacific island nations have long been leaders in the fight against climate change. However, Australia’s current Paris Agreement emission reduction target remains one of the weakest among wealthy nations.

I am writing today to urge you to:
•             Double Australia’s current Nationally Determined Contribution
•             Commit to zero net emissions by 2050
•             Maximise the opportunities associated with the COVID-19 recovery package to boost the renewable energy sector and low emissions transport sector 
•             Provide additional funds beyond the current aid budget to finance climate mitigation and adaptation under the Paris agreement, including contributing to the Green Climate Fund. 
 
I note your intention to ensure that Australia does not use Kyoto credits to meet its current Paris Agreement target. While this is a positive step, however, it is not in itself an adequate response to the climate crisis our world is facing.

I want Australia to be an international leader in fighting climate change and I want to be proud of Australia's response to this growing threat to our children's future.

As future generations face unprecedented risks due to climate change, now is the time to stand together with our Pacific neighbours and work together to secure the region's future.
