On 27 March 2024 the Australian Government rushed to introduce the Migration Amendment (Removal and Other Measures) Bill 2024 to Parliament. The Bill has passed the House of Representatives and it’s now in the Senate, where it has been referred to a Senate Committee inquiry projected to report back to the Senate on 7 May 2024.
If the Bill becomes law, it will have the following potential implications for those seeking safety in Australia:
1. Make it more difficult to seek asylum in Australia
2. Legalise indefinite detention of those refusing to voluntarily return to their country of origin ...

If the Bill becomes law, it will have the following potential implications for those seeking safety in Australia:
1. Make it more difficult to seek asylum in Australia
2. Legalise indefinite detention of those refusing to voluntarily return to their country of origin despite fears of harm and persecution
3. Ban entire populations overseas from applying for any Australian visa at the discretion of the Minister, effectively resulting in widespread family separation for many in CALD communities residing in Australia

If it becomes law, the Bill will have significant impacts on human rights and Australia's international reputation. It is also likely to contravene the International Convention and Protocols on Refugees to which Australia is a signatory,
