This year’s theme for National Reconciliation Week from 27 May to 3 June 2021 is - “More than a word. Reconciliation takes action”.

To mark this special week, we invite you to take action by writing to Prime Minister Scott Morrison and asking him to support a referendum to enshrine a First Nations Voice to Parliament in the Australian Constitution.

A First Nations Voice to Parliament is one of 3 fundamental pillars of the First Nations-led ‘Uluru Statement from the Heart’. A Voice to Parliament would deliver practical and meaningful constitutional recognition and would allow Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to have a say on policies and laws that impact on them.

Dear Prime Minister

I am writing to you during National Reconciliation Week because I support real action on reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

Reconciliation is about creating a shared future by addressing the past and negotiating a collective way forward through a renewed relationship. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have shown us how reconciliation can be achieved. The ‘Uluru Statement from the Heart’ is an invitation to all Australians to participate in a movement for reconciliation. It calls for structural reform including constitutional change to establish a Voice to Parliament.

The Voice to Parliament will deliver practical and meaningful constitutional recognition and will allow Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to have a say on policies and laws that impact on them. I support a constitutionally enshrined Voice to Parliament and want my say in a referendum in the next term of Parliament.

Australia has failed to fully understand that the creation of this great nation has been detrimental to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.  Australia has not reflected on its historical relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and the nation has not seriously thought about or acted upon changing that relationship.

I urge you, as Prime Minister and leader of the Australian nation, to grasp this moment in history to show meaningful leadership on this foundational issue.

By supporting a constitutionally recognised Voice to Parliament you can create the narrative for change that is necessary for genuine reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This will be a liberating experience for all Australians and a defining moment in the history of our nation.
